Texas electricity · Free bill review

Is your electric bill too high? Texas power plans are confusing.

Send us your last two electric bills. We'll check whether you're paying too much, then email you a few plans that cost less for the way your home uses power. It's free.

Why your last two bills?

The price you see in an electricity ad is what you'd pay if you used exactly 1,000 kWh in a month. Most homes use more or less than that, and it changes every month. Many plans also add credits or fees that raise your price when you use more or less than they expect.

Your last two bills show what you really pay, month to month. That's how we find plans that cost less for your home, not just plans that look cheap in an ad.

Example
Advertised rate (at 1,000 kWh)12.9¢
Real price in a 640 kWh month (whole bill ÷ kWh)19.8¢

How it works

  1. 1

Send us your last two bills

Your two most recent electric bills: a PDF from your provider's website or app, or a clear photo. It takes a minute.

  2. 2

    We do the math

We work out your real price per kWh and compare it with current plans for your area and your usage.

  3. 3

    We email you the results

Within about 2 business days, we email you what you really pay and a few better plans, each with a link. If you like one, you switch yourself in a few minutes. If you don't, you do nothing.

Credit frozen or locked? Unfreeze it before you switch, so you're not asked for a deposit or turned down.

What we look at

  • Your real price per kWh, all charges included
  • Your utility's delivery charges (Oncor, CenterPoint, AEP, TNMP)
  • Bill credits and minimum-usage fees
  • Your contract end date and any early termination fee

Where do I find my bill?

Log in to your electricity provider's website or app (Reliant, TXU Energy, Gexa, Green Mountain, Direct Energy…), open Billing or Bill history, and download the last two bills as PDFs. A clear photo of a paper bill works too.

Free. We never switch your plan: you choose. We may earn a commission if you switch through our link.

    Questions

    Is it really free?

Yes. Reviewing your bills and emailing your comparison costs you nothing. If you switch through one of our links, the provider may pay us a commission. That doesn't change which plans we show you or what you pay.

    Will you switch my plan?

No. We never switch you. We email you the options; if you like one, you sign up yourself, on the provider's own page.

    Will switching check my credit?

Usually, yes. Most Texas electricity providers check your credit when you sign up, to decide whether you need a deposit. If your credit is frozen or locked with Equifax, Experian or TransUnion, unfreeze it (or lift it for a few days) before you switch. Otherwise the provider can't check it, and you could be asked for a deposit or turned down when you'd have been approved. You can freeze it again once you're signed up.

Will my power be interrupted if I switch?

No. Your utility (like Oncor or CenterPoint) keeps delivering your electricity. Only the company that bills you changes.

    What about my current contract?

Leaving a contract early can cost an early termination fee. We'll show you your contract end date and fee if they're on your bill, so you can decide when to switch. Two times there's no fee in Texas: switching in the last 14 days before the end date on your contract expiration notice (your provider must send it before your contract ends), and moving out of your home (give your provider your new address or other proof of the move).

I'm moving. Is now a good time?

Yes. In Texas, your provider can't charge an early termination fee when you move, as long as you give them your new address or other proof of the move. Send us your bills and tell us your move date when we email you: you can start a new plan at your new home without paying to leave the old one.

What do you do with my bills?

We use them only to compare your plan. They're stored privately, seen only by us, and deleted after 90 days. We don't sell them or share them.

I live outside Texas. Can you help?

This review is for Texas homes where you can choose your electricity provider. Most of the state can, including Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston and much of Central and South Texas.
